BLEND's Top Picks for ACL
By Blair Fielder
From rock royalty to a Kardashian baby-daddy , Austin City Limit’s 16th annual festival offers an expansive lineup that caters to every music taste and age. To make the most of all seven stages, here are BLEND’s top picks for who to see by day.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 5TH/12TH
Topaz Jones (Weekend One) - HomeAway Stage 11:15-12pm
This rapper from Montclair, NJ made his debut in 2016 with “Arcade”, and his latest song “Black & White” is worth checking out if you like vibey tracks with live-instrumentation.
Asleep at the Wheel (Weekend One) - Honda Stage 12-12:45pm
Is it ACL if Asleep at the Wheel isn’t on the lineup? This seasoned alum of the festival has 10 Grammys, 20 studio albums and 20 country Billboard chart-ranking singles under their belt. Their new 2018 album brings new-life into his country classic.
Cuco- HomeAway Stage 12:45-1:45pm
This 19-year-old mixes English and Spanish in his chill, dreamy tracks. Our favorites include “Drown” and “Summer Time High Time”.
Bishop Briggs- American Express Stage 1:45-2:45pm
Bishop Briggs’ powerful indie sound will be the perfect afternoon pick-me-up with hit tracks like “River” and “Wild Horses”.
BØRNS- Honda 3:45-4:45pm
BØRNS’s crazy falsetto will have all of Zilker trying to hit high notes on rock favorites like “10,000 Emerald Pools,”“Past Lives,” and platinum-certified “Electric Love.”
Jungle- Barton Springs Stage 4:45-5:45pm
Jungle has a reputation for their live performances and all eight members on stage will make you want to dance with funky 70s-style hits like “Busy Earnin’”.
Gryffin- Tito’s Handmade Vodka Tent 5:30-6:30pm
This DJ spins happy chart-topping songs like “Tie Me Down” and “Feel Good” featuring Illenium and Daya. Even if you aren’t a fan of EDM, Gryffin’s graphics and remixes of crowd favorites will make for a fun show.
Father John Misty- Barton Springs Stage 6:45-7:45pm
John Tillman, ex-drummer for indie folk band Fleet Foxes, gave himself a new moniker in 2012 and the rest is history. His playful melodies and ironic lyrics offer something for all-ages to relate to, and this is one of BLEND’s most anticipated performances. Siri, add “God’s Favorite Customer” to the queue.
ODESZA- Honda Stage 7:45-9:00pm
If there’s an artist who would make me question missing Paul McCartney, ODESZA is it. Their newest album, “A Moment Apart,” reached #3 on Billboard, was nominated for two Grammys, and landed them a spot on the Coachella lineup this year. ODESZA’s soothing dreamlike tracks paired with unparalleled lights will be the talk of Austin.
Paul McCartney- American Express Stage 7:45-10:00pm
This 76-year-old and Beatles alum is playing one of the most anticipated performances of the weekend. With smash hit after smash hit, there’s no way you won’t know at least one of his songs. ACL is about bringing people together through music, and “Hey Jude”, “Blackbird”, and “Let It Be” played live at Zilker might just start a movement of love. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 6TH/13TH
slenderbodies- HomeAway Stage 12:00-12:45pm
This duo from California makes perfect music for beach bonfires and breezy nights, but I’m sure ACL will be a close second. Tracks like “anemone” and “lucid” capture their whispery-rock sound that you can go ahead and add to your chillest playlist.
Japanese Breakfast- Barton Springs Stage 3:30-4:30pm
Michelle Zauner’s lo-fi indie sound is both classic and fresh. Check out her cover of “Dreams” by the Cranberries to see her seamlessly fuse new and old, but for her original songs, check out “Road Head” and “Boyish” before you head to the Barton Springs Stage.
Sofi Tukker (Weekend One) - Tito’s Handmade Vodka Tent 4:30-5:30pm
Do you miss 90s dance music? If so, Sofi Tukker is your updated solution. Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern make up this duo known for “Drinkee” and “Best Friend,’ which was featured in an Apple commercial last year and received a Grammy nomination.
San Holo- Tito’s Handmade Vodka Tent 6:30-7:30

St. Vincent (Weekend One)- Miller Lite Stage 7:30-8:30pm
With a her new album MASSEDUCTION dropping October 13th, hopes are high that indie-artist St. Vincent will debut new music at the festival. With past collaborations from David Byrne who is also playing at the festival, their might even be a surprise duet. Fingers crossed!
Metallica- American Express Stage 8:00-10:00pm
Known for their theatrical stadium tours, Metallica is a rock legend with classics like “Enter Sandman” and “One”. With a spot in the Rock Hall of Fame and a sales record of over 110 million albums, Metallica deserves a spot on your ACL schedule even if you aren’t a fan. Trust me, after seeing them you will be.cf
SUNDAY OCTOBER 7TH/14TH

Bahamas is an indie-rock duo that debuted in 2009. Their sexy rock sound has us excited to see “All the Time”, “Caught Me Thinking”, and “No Expectations”.
Rezz- HomeAway Stage 5:00-6:00pm
Rezz is a Canadian DJ who wears light-up goggles as she mixes trap and EDM in a genre she self-describes as “fucking whatever.” This set isn’t for the faintest of heart, but it is ideal if you like shuffling and loud bass. Our favorite tracks include “H E X” and “Relax”.
Shawn Mendes (Weekend 2)- Honda Stage 6:00-7:00
Shawn Mendes is the pinnacle of pop and every teen girl’s dream with popular songs “Stitches”, “In My Blood”, and “Youth” just to name a few. His soulful voice and catchy melodies will make you wish you were young enough to have posted of him all over your wall without it being weird.
Camila Cabello (Weekend 1)- American Express Stage 6:30-7:30pm
Camila Cabello’s “Havana” was inescapable last summer, and ever since, her Latin-pop sound has been on every radio station across the country. The singer also collaborated with Bazzi for the song “Beautiful,” and if we are lucky, they may show up at each other’s sets for the song.
