Beers with the Band featuring Black Joe Lewis

I was at a Do512 lounge party when I first saw Black Joe Lewis and the HoneyBears perform. Although I had never seen them play, all of my fellow coworkers and party-attendees were more than excited that Black Joe Lewis would be playing that night. From the minute their set started I began to understand why everyone loved them so much. These guys were blues, funk, soul, rock and everything in-between.

Joe Lewis formed Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears in good-old Austin performing at BeerLand and other legendary small music venues in Austin. It wasn’t long before the band started gaining national attention as they moved up in the music world opening for Spoon and Okkervil River. The band has performed at pretty much every music festival on a music-lovers bucket list such as Coachella, Lollapolooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and many others. Joe Lewis said that at Coachella he looked backstage and Usher was hanging out back there. One of their most popular songs “Bitch I Love You” will make you dance around your house on a Sunday morning and make any music-lover fall back in love with soul music. Joe Lewis stated in his interview with BLEND that the band decided to drop the “Honeybears” part of their band name and move on without it. BLEND had the opportunity to sit down with lead man Joe Lewis to talk about his most recent tour and album which were released late last year.

We hung out at Friends and Allies Brewery in East Austin for this segment of Beers with the Band and let me just say, I will be hanging out here every Saturday I can get from now on. Located in a cool complex with an Austin Bouldering Project and Austin Eastciders you’ll have lots to do once you get a few drinks in you. Offering a variety of beers that are brewed in their production facility and tasting room right in East Austin you’ll experience drinking the real local way. Our personal favorite beers we tried were:

  1. Sportsball Pilsner (not only because it says you’re killing me Smalls on the front but also because it was so good).

  2. Springdale (a super yummy White Ale that was a major staff favorite).
