Weekly Austin Events

Throughout the half-year I’ve lived in Austin I’ve stumbled across some really cool places and events. One of the coolest things that I’ve experienced so far in Austin have been the weekly/monthly events that go on at some of the venues. Spider House and Hole in the Wall are a couple of the venues that I have found to consistently have fun and unique events going on throughout the year.

Spider House, located right off of Guadalupe and 29th, is already a beautiful trip on its own with an insane amount of colorful lights— but the events they have with the attached Spider House Ballroom truly separates them. The first event I ever went to here was a slam-poetry competition, which is an event held every Thursday in the Ballroom. I’m not going to lie, at first I was hesitant to go to a slam-poetry competition, but it was super sick. Anyone can enter, and many of the brave souls who got up there on that stage truly touched my heart with beautifully personal (and sometimes freaking hilarious) poems. Another quirky and fun event that Spider House puts on every weekend is Shit-Faced Shakespeare (awesome, right?). I haven’t made it out to this one yet, but it’s definitely on my bucket list.

At Hole in the Wall, located on Guadalupe right across from campus, there is free, live music every Tuesday and free karaoke every night! On the third Thursday of every month (the next one is this Thursday, February 21st) there is “3 for 3 Thursday’s” which is $3 for 3 acts of the punk genre, if you’re into that. You can check there website for other events weekly— they have a plethora of changing events going on every week!

If you’re looking for comedy, venues like The Fallout Theatre and Cherrywood Coffeehouse have multiple free comedy shows every week!

Austin is a hub for events all-year-round, and it doesn’t take much research or effort to discover them. Get out there this week and find an event you think you would enjoy or maybe one that pushes your comfort zone— I guarantee you it will be more memorable and growth-inducing than sitting on the couch!
