Reflecting on Trendy Foods
There are some culinary trends that seem to become “the latest thing” in a matter of hours. Where did avocado toast come from? What about zoodles? (That’s zucchini noodles for those of you out of the loop.) How did I wake up one day craving kombucha having never tried it before? We are going to break down the most up-and-coming, unexpected, hardly appealing food trends that we predict will be on your plate in a matter of months, if they aren’t already.

You knew that was coming. As a child, you probably gagged over the idea of eating your mom’s soggy brussels. But not anymore! We are now sophisticated and evolved enough to crave, enjoy, and buy brussels by ourselves! If you’re not convinced, hop on the bandwagon and follow these easy directions:
Preheat oven to 425F.
Cut each sprout in half and coat with olive oil, garlic and salt.
Bake in oven for 8-12 minutes or until desired crispiness.
Thank me later.
No more trying to be healthy with your whole grain wheat bread. Sourdough is already healthy AND delicious. Because it contains active yeast, eating sourdough does wonders to your gut health. The farmer’s market at Mueller has a beautiful sourdough vendor called “The Sourdough Project” on Sundays if you’re looking to shop local. Texas French Bread also has a beautiful selection as well.
Rolled Ice Cream
You’ve seen it on your Instagram explorer page: that oh-so-aesthetically-pleasing concoction of thin-as-ice ice cream. But really, this is a delightful (albeit overpriced) twist on a timeless classic. Live out this fantasy at the newly-opened Frozen Rolls Creamery on North Lamar.
Meet brussel sprouts’ strange cousin. Although we are unsure of how and when asparagus will dominate millennials’ palates, these green trees will undoubtedly be making themselves well known in 2019. Why is this true? Because they can EASILY be manipulated to taste like anything your heart desires. Grill them. Fry them. Sautée them. Experiment and give these beauties the attention they DESERVE.
Sweet Potato Toast
Last but not least are the ‘King of Spuds’. Not to be confused with yams, sweet potatoes need to be on your weekly shopping list starting today. Since avocado toast is now mainstream, foodies are resorting to a different way to enjoy toast: through thinly sliced sweet potatoes. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it. Just close your eyes and go through your daily toast ritual, but with sweet potatoes. It’s that simple. Instagram and the internet are overflowing with recipes that you need to try.
Branch out. Surprise yourself. Hop on a bandwagon or two. Think we missed any underground food trends? Let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear from you.
