How To Do A Low Budget Day in Austin

So... You’re in Austin for the day? Or maybe you’ve lived here your whole life... Or maybe you just moved here to start a new life... Whatever the case may be, you’ve likely stumbled across this article in search of what to do in good ole Austin, Texas today. Given that on any day the options will be different, I can’t give you a black and white answer on what you should really do. Well I guess even if I did know your options, I still wouldn’t be able to tell you what to do because there’s too high of a chance that we may have different ideas of fun. So... with that being said, I’m going to do my best to give you a creative process, if you will, for doing a low budget day in Austin.

You could start your day off by checking out Austin’s beautiful Zilker Park, home to ACL Music Festival and many other events. Zilker is a really huge and open park with a great view of downtown, literally anything you might want to do in a park can be done here. A picnic, fetch with your dog, tossing the football. Literally anything. It’s also located right on Barton Springs, so if you wanted to cool off and take a swim, you could!

A great resource for finding events going on every day and night is the Do512 website. Their site has a really simple listing of all of the events happening in Austin on a given day. Depending on the day, there is usually going to be at least one free event going on. Just last night there were two free comedy shows going on that I found there. My friends and I have gone to free concerts, slam poetry, and comedy shows that we’ve found on the Do512 website a ton of times. Not every event is going to be free, but there are still always a whole bunch of great, cheap options.

For all you late night birds looking for the Austin night scene, a fun and affordable place to go is to ‘Dirty’ Sixth Street. My favorite bar on ‘Dirty Sixth’ is Midnight Cowboy (probably in big part because of its sweet name), but there are a bunch of affordable bars. I highly suggest bar-hopping and getting a small taste of multiple bars, I guarantee you that you’ll stumble across a few gems down good ole’ ‘Dirty Sixth’.

There are so many fun and affordable things you could do. Visit the iconic murals around town. Go to the “i love you so much” at Jo’s coffee, head south on 1st Street for the classic“Greetings from Austin” or the “Hi, How Are You?” located near the UT campus. Trust me, you’ll have the coolest Instagram feed after visiting all of the murals. Nothing can stop you. Of course, Austin is one of the live music capitals of the world, so always be on the lookout for your favorite artists coming to town.
