Getting to Know Your Local Representatives: A Crash Course!

Getting familiar with your local and state representatives can be tough, but in today's political climate, it’s important to know who represents you and what they stand for. When you vote, you vote for change or for things to stay the same, and it’s important you know that the person you’re voting for represents what you believe in. So I made you guys a little beginners chart, matching important figures at the state and local levels with the easiest Austin drinking companies to memorize. Matching politics with beer and liquor? I think us Austinites can get behind that.

By Judy Carroll

Let’s start simple. Steve Adler. Mayor of Austin. Definitely someone you want to familiarize yourself with as an Austinite. We’ve paired him with a vodka most of you are probably a little too familiar with, Tito’s!

Key Facts:

  • Democrat

  • Been Mayor since 2015 and his current term ends Jan. 5th, 2023, so we’ve got him for quite a bit longer, let’s get acquainted.

  • In 2016, with the help of the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, Adler made significant progress in housing the military veterans of Austin.

  • Quote: “Austin is a magical place with a special spirit and soul. We value diversity, creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, our natural environment, and a laid back attitude. In Austin, everyone is good enough and no one is too good. Here you’ll find friendly neighbors.”

So next time you’re pre-gaming with this Austin party vodka, you’re gonna think about Mayor Adler, right?

Next up! Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas!

For the conservative leader that he is, I’ve paired Governor Abbott with this “super dry” Austin Eastciders drink. No bias intended, *winks*.

Key Facts:

  • Republican

  • As the state of Texas grows in population, Governor Abbott prides himself in keeping job creation steady and growing with a record number of Texans employed.

  • His wife is the first hispanic First Lady of Texas, but he has also proudly signed legislation banning sanctuary cities. This may be confusing, and that’s exactly why it's important to know who represents you.

  • Quote: “All of this we can do. All of this we must do. Because we live in the greatest state in America, and we have an obligation to make it even better.”

Say it with me! Governor Abbott-Austin Eastcider- Abbott- Eastcider!

Lastly, we’ll cover one of our Texas senators. To cater to the long-running joke that Ted Cruz simply is no fun, I’ve paired him with a classic non-alcoholic beverage, a Topo Chico.

Key Facts:

  • Republican

  • In 2017, Ted Cruz focused a lot of attention on space exploration and research on the medical effects on humans in space.

  • In the state of Texas, where our education system is so fragile, Ted Cruz believes that education decisions should be made at the state and local level, where communities can be more involved. Considering it’s so easy to reach out to your senators, it’s important to know what exactly Ted Cruz views on education are, since he promotes the input of the community.

Next time you’re drinking a Topo and feeling no buzz at all, I hope Ted Cruz makes an appearance in your thoughts.

Now remember, we do have another Texas senator, Senator John Cornyn, and 36 Texas congress men and women who all affect our social and political lives. So get to know your representatives, and take a shot for the Lonestar State while you’re at it.
