BLEND's National Mezcal Round Up in ATX

Holy Smokes! Mezcal, an agave-based libation that tastes like you’re drinking a campfire, is something you either love or love to hate. Whatever stance you take, it’s popping up all over Austin from Mexican restaurants to local mezcalerias. Coming up on Sunday, October 21st is National Mezcal Day and there is no better way to celebrate than with a craft cocktail at these local hot spots and mezcal bars.

MEZCAL BARS

Las Perlas Mezcaleria / 405 E 7th St

This second location of the nation’s first-ever mezcal bar serves up tastes of Oaxaca in the heart of Austin’s nightlife scene. With a nightly happy hour from 5-8 PM and 12-2 PM, mezcal lovers have ample opportunity  to sip on their favorite drinks at a discount. If mezcal is really your thing, the bar offers a mezcal collective that meets twice a month to celebrate the loved drink and discover new favorites.

Located atop of Mi Madre’s, this cocktail bar serves up mezcal and agave drinks in a traditional atmosphere. We recommend the Mezcal margarita to get your flavor fix.

PLACES NOT OPEN ON OCT 21, BUT WORTH CHECKING OUT!

Mezcalería Tobalá / 1816 E 6th St

Head upstairs from Whisler’s to find this tiny, rustic Mezcal bar that looks like something out of West World. Mezcalería Tobalá offers a wide selection of the celebrated drink including: Mexicano, Madre Cuixe, Arroqueño, Tobalá, Tepextate, Jabali, Pechuga and Espadin. For exclusive mezcal festivities, this venue can be rented out for private parties of 20 or under since it won’t be open for the holiday.

Bar Illegal / 609 Davis St

Bar Illegal, located in the back of Clive, is a mezcal speakeasy serving up illegal Mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico. This little shack is unmarked with a red door, but the drinks make up for its unassuming looks.
