BLEND got the amazing opportunity to check out one of East Austin’s latest additions to the already eclectic array of delicious restaurants in the area. A family owned, family run business, Gabriela’s Downtown is proof that sometimes it is best to mix family with business.

Gabriela Bucio, owner of Gabriela’s Downtown, sat down and talked to BLEND about the history of Gabriela’s and gave us a little behind-the-scenes about all the work that went into opening up the restaurant 10 months ago. Using a lot of their family recipes to build their menu, you can taste just how fresh the ingredients and food is as soon as it hits your tongue. The Gabby’s Margarita, is a house special even making the tamarind syrup in house, so you know they aren’t using any fake powders for that special flavoring. Gabriela said that she “grew up with tamarind trees at her grandma’s house” so she knows how to work with it. Another fun fact Gabriela shared with BLEND is that her mom comes in every morning to help make the Horchata, thus naming the drink ‘Nena’s Horchata’ after her mom.

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever eaten at. It’s hard for a place to make food look and taste amazing but Gabriela’s does it flawlessly

The house that Gabriela’s is located in has a long history of restaurants that have come-and-gone, but I can guarantee that Gabriela’s Downtown is going to be there for a long time. They’ve added a bigger front and back patio for more outdoor eating. The back patio probably has one of the best views of the Austin skyline, with their Sunday Brunches turning into an all out dance party for all their guests.

Each bite of food, every sip of drink, you will be able to tell how much the family behind Gabriela’s Downtown has worked to get to where they are. The next time you are looking for a happy hour or a fun, new brunch spot on the weekends check out Gabriela’s Downtown. For more information on their hours check out their website.
